new aloha wish necklace collection - tiny text

it's been a while since i posted. i'm having a hard time keeping up with my blog, facebook and twitter. really, how do people do it. i don't feel like i have too many interesting things going on in my life on a daily basis that anyone would want to read.

but, i do have a new collection of aloha wish necklaces. they feature a natural puka shell and a tiny text charm of inspirational words: love, live, hope, dream, believe, laugh.

a testimonial

so my friend carol just sent me an email about my aloha wish necklaces and i just had to share it....

"I gave one of the wish necklaces to my friend Johanna. She is my best friends wife. She and Pete have been trying to conceive their second child for a while. She wore it and hoped to get pregnant. The day it fell off, they found out that she is pregnant!

Now, clearly, they wouldn’t name a kid after me as we all hate my name (yes, I hate the name Carol) but they are letting me pick a Hawaiian name!"

so you never know what the spirit of Hawaii can bring.....thanks carol for sharing and best wishes to johanna and pete!

Diving with a Frogfish

Last weekend Todd and I went scuba diving and had a wonderful encounter with a frogfish. I love these guys. Here's some info about this wonderful creature from "Hawaii's Fishes, A Guide for Snorkelers, Divers and Aquarists" by John P. Hoover....

Frogfishes, or anglerfishes, are the ultimate sedentary preditors. Barely recognizable as fishes, they sit for long periods in one spot, either blending in perfectly with the reef or mimicking its surrounding color and pattern. Their pectoral fins grasp the coral like hands or feet, and can be used (with the help of a joint) to clamber about. One of their dorsal spines resembles a fishing pole; a lure at the end is dangled over an enormous mouth. Fishes, large or small, attracted to the waving lure soon find themselves inside the frogsfish, whose innards can expend twelve-fold to accommodate guests of any size. With a reflex measured in milliseconds, frogfishes swallow their prey far too quickly for the eye to follow.

Most remarkably, these awkward fishes are jet propelled. Although poor swimmers in the normal sense, some (if not all) species can gulp water through their large mouths and eject it under pressure through small, round gill openings set far back on the body. By this means, perhaps aided by currents and surge, they can "fly" considerable distances.

Frogfishes rely almost entirely on camouflage for protection; they can inflate with water when molested, but have no sharp spines and are not poisonous. Preferring deeper water, they are unlikely to be seen by snorkelers. Nine species inhabit Hawaii's reefs. Most are small and rarely seen.

nuptial bowls

this is a project i've been wanting to make for a while now and have been away from doing pottery for several months but have now put my hands back into clay....finally. long overdue. my dear friend amy got married last summer and i really wanted to make a special handmade gift for her and her new husband roger (congrats!)....after all, how many glass vases and kitchen electronics do we really need? how about a good old fashioned large serving bowl for salads, pasta, or just to hold fruit? and something personalized? and 2 more good friends getting married (one today...congrats cheryl and nathan and one in june, paula and tim). so i'm making large bowls out of porcelain with their name and date. the bowl measures about 14" round and 5" deep with shell impression feet (had to give it a mauidivegirl flair). these pics show them unfinished. it still needs to be bisque fired, then glazed and fired again. i'm thinking a nice translucent pale celadon glaze in order to see the letter impressions. i'm crossing my fingers and hope they turn out. sorry amy and roger for such a late wedding gift....i hope you like.

island hair flair

rita hair clip.

leilani hair clip.

sasha hair clip.
i love hair accessories. maybe it's because i can't wear them since my hair is super short. but if i had long locks, i would decorate my dew with flowers (ok, cheesy, but it's the hair envy talking). so i decided to make a few silk flower hair clips embellished with a few swarovski crystals. a little color and romance...and valentines day is just around the corner. big thanks to my dear friend morningstar for being the perfect model. xoxo.

it made it!

I'm pleased to announce that a recent piece of my pottery has been selected for the Hui No'eau Annual Juried Exhibition 2009.
http://www.blogger.com/img/blank.gif
Maui artists entered 210 pieces of artwork, in all types of media, with 59 being selected for the final exhibit. I'm very pleased, this is the 3rd year in a row having pottery selected. My piece is hand built/coil method, not wheel thrown, burnished and pit fired, no glaze. Size is 6" H x 4" W, without base.

For those of you who live on Maui or visiting soon, I invite you to see the show. It is located at the Hui No'eau, Maui's Visual Arts Center in Makawao. The exhibition dates are January 10 to February 10, 2009.

For more information, see the article published in the Maui Weekly.
